The events of Dust: An Elysian Tail unfold in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures, where a protagonist named Dust comes to life around a talking sword Blade Ahra and his keeper, Fidget. Not remembering anything about his past, Dast follows the advice of Fidget and helps the inhabitants of the world in resisting the army of General Gaius. Dust: An Elysian Tail is an adventure game that uses metro-mechanics to study levels, which requires the player to learn and master new skills of Dust in order to get to previously inaccessible places. The combat system uses elements of Beat ’em up, where Dust can combine attacks with a sword and magic, which Fidget owns, to defeat enemies. Dodrill wrote the code and created the content for the game almost alone, relying on external assistance only in matters of character dubbing, narration, and the soundtrack of the game.
